Djinkore Women's Garden

The garden site, with a pile of wood for building the fence. We picked the site because it's right next to the well, in the middle of the village, and it'll be easy to carry water there.

The women watered the ground for two days, then we divided the space up into 17 plots (one for each woman who wanted one) and spent a day double-digging the beds and adding manure to the soil. The dirt was actually pretty good already though, the area had been sort of a trash spot for the village and the donkeys used to hang out there, so there was good stuff in the ground.

The garden a couple months later ... the women planted tomatoes, eggplant, lettuce, onions, carrots, and cabbage. The tomatoes, eggplant and lettuce (a hot season variety) did really well, the other things not as much, maybe due to the heat. A lot of other plants came up on their own from the manure, including okra, corn, bissap, and even some peanuts.
